Chalkline / Features / Diagrams as code

Text in, diagram out

Write the diagram. Chalkline draws it.

Six kinds of diagram from plain text, in the same editor where you sketch by hand. Paste what you already have from a README, a ticket or another tool, and keep editing on the canvas.

Flowcharts with two way sync

Type A --> B and the shapes appear; drag or rename them on the canvas and the text updates. Auto layout arranges everything in tidy layers, top down or left to right.

  • Boxes, rounded boxes, decisions, circles, databases and notes
  • Labelled, dashed and plain connections
  • Live sync as you type

Sequence, class and database diagrams

sequenceDiagram, classDiagram and erDiagram text become proper diagrams with lifelines, UML end markers and crow's foot cardinality.

  • Participants, actors, notes, loops and alt blocks
  • Inheritance, composition, aggregation and dependencies
  • Tables with keys, and one to many relationships

Gantt charts for plans and theses

Tasks with dates, durations in days or weeks, dependencies with after, sections, milestones and critical tasks, drawn on a dated axis.

  • Durations in days, weeks or hours
  • Milestones and sections
  • Edit the text and the chart updates in place

Neural network figures

Write the layers in one line, like Input(28x28x1) -> Conv(32, 3x3) -> ReLU -> MaxPool -> Dense(10) -> Softmax, and Chalkline draws the stack with tensor blocks, feature maps and neuron layers, labelled with their sizes.

  • Convolution, pooling, dense, attention, LSTM, normalisation and more
  • Branches and skip connections with named layers
  • Ready for a paper: export as vector PDF or TikZ

Bring your existing code

Paste Mermaid, D2 or PlantUML, or open .mmd, .d2 and .puml files. D2 graphs and PlantUML activity diagrams become flowcharts you can keep editing; PlantUML sequence and class diagrams use the matching builder.

  • Mermaid: flowchart, sequence, class, ER, Gantt
  • D2: shapes, labels, chains and directions
  • PlantUML: sequence, class and activity

Questions

Good to know

Yes. Paste Mermaid text into Diagram as text and it is drawn on the board, with no network. Flowcharts stay in sync both ways; other kinds redraw in place when you apply the text again.

Yes, the common parts: D2 graphs with labels, shapes and directions, and PlantUML sequence, class and activity diagrams.

Yes. Write tasks with start dates and durations, use after to chain them, and add milestones. The chart is drawn on a dated axis you can export like any figure.
